The Smart story began in Switzerland with Swatch, the well-known watch company. Its president and founder set out to create a small electric city car with an interchangeable body. Nicolas G. Hayek went in search of industrial partners to develop his project. He failed to reach an agreement with Renault and PSA, then reached an agreement with the Volkswagen group. The latter withdrew from the project in 1991 and was replaced by Mercedes in 1994. The German premium manufacturer saw in this new kind of alliance the opportunity to realise a small car project already developed by one of its engineers. The Smart Fortwo was launched in 1998 and was an immediate success. It was followed by the Smart Roadster and then the Smart Forfour.
